Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning - Hints & Tips

Carpets

In the event of a spill make your own spot/stain remover by mixing 1 teaspoon of non-bio detergent to half a pint of warm water.

If treating tea, coffee or red wine add two tablespoons of white vinegar to the recipe above.

Always test in an inconspicuous area when using any spot/stain removing products.

To keep your carpets looking great vacuum heavy traffic areas on a regular basis to keep soil build up to a minimum.

Using indoor and outdoor entrance mats you will greatly reduce the amount of soil tracked into your home, causing damage to your carpets.

Over time, the stain-resistance of protected carpet wears down. For better protection have a top up protector applied after cleaning.

Stain-resistant does not mean stain-proof. By acting immediately you may prevent any spills from causing permanent damage.

Upholstery

Your furniture collects everyday dirt and soil just like your carpet, light vacuuming on a regular basis will help to keep your upholstery looking good and extend its life.

If it is possible why not flip the back and base cushions to even out the wear.

If you have any upholstery directly in front of a window it may be advisable to draw the curtains or blinds as UV light will cause the fabric to fade.

Mop up any spills as they happen and dry off with a hair dryer on a cool setting, this may prevent any permanent damage.

Try to swap the furniture around in the room from time to time, this could even out the wear.

If your pet sits or sleeps on your upholstery cover that area with a throw to reduce the soiling.

If there is a loose thread coming from your upholstery do not pull it or cut it, attempt to tuck it back into the fabric.

Spot Removal Tips

Act Quickly! Most carpet available today has been treated with a stain-resist treatment so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken. The longer the delay will increase the chance of a spill becoming a permanent stain. Remember no carpets are completely stain proof!

Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white paper towel (no printing).

Do not scrub! Scrubbing may cause pile distortion in the affected area. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry.

For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a rounded spoon. Solids should be broken up and vacuumed until completely removed.

Pre test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area to be certain it will not damage the fibres or cause colour migration.

Apply several drops of solution to the testing area, hold a white paper towel on the area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and paper towel for colour transfer, colour change, or damage to the carpet. If a change occurs, another cleaning solution should be used.

Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth or paper towel and work in gently.

Work from the edges of the spill to the centre to prevent the spill from spreading. Do not scrub! Blot to absorb as much as possible, and repeat if necessary.

Be patient! Complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times.

After the spill has been completely removed, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed.

Some cleaning solutions will cause rapid soiling if the solution is not completely removed.

In emergencies make your own spot/stain remover by mixing 1 teaspoon of non-bio detergent to half a pint of warm water. If treating tea, coffee or red wine add two tablespoons of white vinegar.

If you are unable to remove the spot/stain please contact us immediatley, remember, the longer the stain is left in the carpet the more damage it will do to the fibres.
