Health professionals sometimes recommend that allergy and asthma patients should remove carpet from their homes. But those recommendations are generally based on faulty assumptions. In fact, clean, dry, well-maintained carpet actually improves air quality. 

Carpet acts as a trap for airborne particles grounded through natural gravity.

Professional Testing Labs studied the distribution of air borne dust associated with normal activities on hard and soft flooring surfaces.

Their findings showed that walking on hard surfaces disturbed more particles. These particles became airborne and entered the breathing zone. In contrast, carpeted surfaces trapped more particles so that walking disturbed fewer particles.

Result: Less dust in the breathing zone over carpeted floors therefore a well maintained carpet dramatically increases air quality.

Dust Mites

House dust mites are a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms worldwide. The mite's gut contains potent digestive enzymes that persists in their faeces and are major inducers of allergic reactions such as wheezing. House dust mites thrive in the indoor environment and survive well in carpets, furniture and bedding. Although the life span of a dust mite is quite short it's the excrement left behind which causes the main problem.

Plant Pollen & Spores

The types of pollen that most commonly cause allergic reactions are produced by the plain-looking plants such as trees, grasses, and weeds. These plants produce small, light, dry pollen granules. Pollen can enter your home through your windows or walked in on your shoes. There are three general approaches to the treatment of pollen allergy; avoidance of the allergen, medication to relieve symptoms, and injection treatments.

Mould Spores

This is one of the most significant causes of allergic diseases indoors. Moulds release spores and it is these spores that cause the allergic reactions in people. Spores are microscopic particles released by moulds in their thousands into the atmosphere. Spores contact skin and nasal and bronchial membranes, causing symptoms such as rhinitis, itchy eyes, eczema and most importantly asthma.

Pet Hair

Proteins from household pet hair can cause an allergic reaction that attacks the eyes and the airways. When moving house or flat, the chances of the former owners having had a pet are high. It may take months, even years, before the level of allergens are so low that an allergic reaction is not a possibility.
